Distinguished and Famous people from Broadmeadows

Broadmeadows was the childhood home of a migrant who built a national retail business. His later success drew public attention, but the local connection began with family settlement and schooling.

📱 John Ilhan

John Ilhan grew up in Broadmeadows after arriving in Australia from Turkey and attended Broadmeadows Secondary College. He founded the Crazy John's mobile phone business in Melbourne in 1991 and expanded it into a national chain. Tributes after his death in 2007 recalled both his business drive and his support for charitable causes and community members. His first shop was in Brunswick, rather than Broadmeadows; the local connection is his upbringing and education. His funeral at the Broadmeadows mosque brought family, friends and many others back to the community associated with those early years.

🤝 Ernie Briggs

Ernie Briggs served as full-time chaplain at the Broadmeadows military camp from 1968 until ill health brought retirement in November 1969. A Salvation Army officer with decades of military welfare work behind him, he was known to soldiers as the P.K. Kid for his habit of distributing chewing gum. During World War II he organised entertainment, refreshments and practical help, once recalling that he served a thousand cups of coffee in forty minutes in New Guinea. His later work included helping families hear recorded messages from servicemen overseas. Broadmeadows was a late chapter in a career built around morale, conversation and small comforts.
